Wurkplace: When is the right time to hire people?

We spoke to the HR Specialists, Wurkplace about when is the right time to hire people. It may seem like a straightforward question: when you have an open position, right? Whilst that is usually the go to, there are a few different factors to think about in order to benefit your company.

When you have a vacancy

A position may become available when an employee resigns, retires or been promoted. You’ll need to recruit to fill the role but what happens when the role that is becoming vacant is a higher level role requiring a high level of experience?

This is where you can look at succession – is there anyone that has prospects that is already in the business to fill this role? If so, you can promote this person who is aware of the company and has the potential to be trained to a high level. Not only will it improve your employee engagement but now you need to recruit for a ‘lower level’ role which may be more easily filled.

When You’re A Start Up

In the beginning, you may not have an abundance of finances behind you to have a big recruitment drive. However as a start up, you will need to recruit some key people in order for your business to flourish. This will help you delegate roles such as payroll or administration which may be time consuming and takes away the time you need to grow your business.

Recruitment strategies such as social media and online forums can be useful as they’re free – you will need to ensure that you are not being discriminatory and alternatives such as an ad in the paper can also be used in conjunction.

Your Employees Are Experiencing Burn Out

If your employees are experiencing burnout then it can be a good idea to recruit more employees. Burnout can be increased levels of stress, being overworked and not coping with the level of work.

Recruiting more staff can prevent burnout and will ensure that your employees remain engaged, productivity does not decrease and employees’ wellbeing is not put at risk. This is all facilities a positive workplace culture. Recruiting more employees may actually save you money in the long run by avoiding these consequences.

Customers Are Complaining

You don’t want your customers to be disappointed and dissatisfied leading to your reputation falling. It may be a case that your current employees aren’t performing as much as they should. As result, you could mean that you need to recruit higher level employees. These would likely engage, motivate and increase levels of productivity. They also may ensure the workload is properly managed.

When You Are Growing / Work Has Increased

Once your business starts to pick up whether it be receiving more orders, getting more clients or the overall demand for services grows then you will need to ensure that you’re able to meet this demand with the correct level of supply. Therefore, in order to do this, you may need to recruit people to cover this. You need to ensure that when you hire people, you actually have the time to train these new recruits whilst ensuring that they are positively impacting the business.

New Skills are Required

Your business may have a new project in the pipeline or your company is stagnant and you want to give the company a push in the right direction. A new set of skills, personality or culture may be exactly what your company needs; a fresh new approach may be needed. Alternatively, it could be that a certain qualification or experience is needed.

Revenue is Decreasing

Following on from the previous, if revenue is decreasing then you may need new employees to solve this. For example, salespeople may be recruited to build relations or contracts or a finance manager to analysis and look at new ways to cut costs or to review your supplier relationships.
