Business Spotlight: Atherton and Associates Wealth Management Ltd

We’re interviewing local businesses that are pioneering in their sector and taking the lead to make innovative, green and/or creative changes to their business and their industry.

We have recently interviewed Atherton & Associates who deliver comprehensive holistic advice to their clients, looking at financial planning as a whole rather than just giving advice in one area.

Firstly, tell us a little bit about Atherton and Associates?

Atherton & Associates Wealth Management Ltd was founded in 2009 and has been managed solely since 2020 by Director & Chartered Financial Planner, Jamie Hull. Jamie has spent his whole working career in financial services and now heads up a highly experienced team of advisors and support staff who specialise in financial planning for individuals and business owners.

Atherton & Associates Wealth Management Ltd are based in Nantwich, on the corner of Park Road and Wellington Road, just a short walk from Nantwich lake.

How are you able to help clients and potential clients?

Our clients rely on us for help with all areas of their financial planning. This is typically;

  • Helping grow their savings and investments to provide the future they want
  • Planning for their retirement and ensuring they have enough income to last them for the rest of their lives
  • Passing on their wealth to the next generation as tax efficiently as possible
  • Helping to fund school fees and giving their children/grandchildren a financial start in life

How important is it for young people to invest in their future?

“Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it; he who doesn’t, pays it”

For example purposes only; if a 25 year old started investing £200 per month (assuming a 6% return), by the time they turned 65, they’d have a nest egg worth £393,700. But if they’d waited until 35 to start saving £200 a month, even with the same rate of return, they’d end up with almost half that- £201,100- by age 65.

These figures are examples only and they are not guaranteed – they are not minimum and maximum amounts. What you get back depends on how your investment grows and the tax treatment of the investment. You could get back more or less than this.

Are there any resources that business owners can access?

We have recently launched our ‘Nantwich Business Owners Club’ with the aim of bringing together local businesses to provide advice and support during all stages of their business cycle. This could be at Start Up, growth, maturity or exit.

Our expectation is that this will grow into a hub for all things business related, meeting quarterly, presenting on topics that are relevant to local businesses, such as; extracting profits tax efficiently, employee benefits and pensions, maximising business value for sale or a planned exit strategy.

Anyone feeling that they would benefit from this should get in touch.

We have also been running ‘financial wellbeing in the workplace’ workshops for companies of all sizes up and down the country, which both employers and employees are finding hugely beneficial.

How are you supporting the local community?

Over the last year, we have been busy in the community helping our local teams, clubs and charities. We have re-named the function room, The Atherton & Associates Suite at Nantwich Town Football Club, which we love being a part of, as well as helping NAR FC provide free community football sessions every Saturday for children of all ages and abilities,

We work closely with the Wingate Special Children’s Trust and have received huge support from the St James’ Place charitable foundation. The team also participates in weekly dress down days in the office and volunteering days to help around the facility with anything from gardening to painting.

We have some big plans in the form of fund-raising events in the future – watch this space!

What are your future plans as a business?

We will naturally grow, looking after and doing the right things by our clients means we get asked to help look after their friends and family and with that, we will continue to grow our skilled team to ensure we maintain our high service and advice standards.

Good financial advisers are hard to find so we will continue to nurture the next generation of advisers through our ‘adviser development programme’.

I expect the business to be around in 100 years’ time, even though we won’t be. Nantwich will always be our home and whilst we provide financial advice nationally, we will continue to help support our local community.

What are your predictions for the industry in the next 12 months?

I think that the events over the last 2-3 years has shown that it’s impossible to predict the future. Uncertainty drives fear and with inflation set to continue to rise and interest rates likely to follow, I expect the demand for good, sound financial planning to be higher than ever.

There will always be short term challenges, inflation and interest rate rises being the most current but it doesn’t last forever. There are many periods in history (too many to mention) where things have been challenging, but we recover and ultimately come out of the other side stronger.

As a company, what is something that you strongly believe in?

To be ethical is to be profitable!

Doing what you think is right, even if sometimes it may not seem to be the best financial decision at the time.

Is there anything you think people should be aware of right now?

Its never been more important to take financial advice. Inflation and interest rates are out of our control but investing and planning for the long term help protects your money from economic and market shocks and gives you the best chance of achieving your financial goals.

The government allows the use of many tax reliefs such as ISA, pension contributions, as well as other allowances and exemptions on personal income, savings and capital gains.

Some of them on a ‘use it or lose it’ basis so it’s important to ensure you understand them to maximise your tax savings.

The value of an investment may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. An investment in equities does not provide the security of capital associated with a deposit account with a bank or building society.

Taxation rules can change at any time and are dependent on individual circumstances.

Exit strategies may include the referral to a service that is separate and distinct to those offered by St. James’s Place.

We work in conjunction with an extensive network of external growth advisers and SME specialists who have been carefully selected by St. James’s Place. The service provided by these specialists are separate and distinct to the services carried out by St. James’s Place and include advice on how to grow your business and prepare your business for sale.

Atherton & Associates Wealth Management Ltd is an Appointed Representative of and represents only St. James’s Place Wealth Management plc (which is authorized and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority) for the purpose of advising solely on the Group’s wealth management products and services, more details of which are set out on the Group’s website www.sjp.co.uk/products. The ‘St. James’s Place Partnership’ and the titles ‘Partner’ and ‘Partner Practice’ are marketing terms used to describe St. James’s Place representatives.
